Gmini400 - Reformatting the Hard Drive / Hard Disk

(These instructions are for WIndows XP, other operating systems may differ)

At some point in it's life, the Gmini goes a bit screwy and you will need to reformat the drive. Archos actually recommend this if you are having playback or copying problems.

This simple guide will walk you through a complete reformat of the internal hard disk of the Gmini.

Back up anything you want to keep, as this procedure will ERASE EVERYTHING on your Gmini. Jaruzel.com is not responsible for any damage to your Gmini you incur by following this guide. You have been warned.

1) Connect the Gmini to your computers USB port. Under 'My Computer' it should appear as 'JUKEBOX' and be assigned a drive letter. If it doesn't appear as 'JUKEBOX', look for any new 'Removable Drives' that weren't there before.

2) Right click on the Gmini icon, if the computer can still access it, it will be labeled 'JUKEBOX'. On the menu that appears, click on Properties.

3) Now Click on the 'Tools' Tab. Under the section entitled 'Error-Checking', Click on the button 'Check Now...'

4) A dialog will appear offering the options to: "Automatically fix file system errors", and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". Click on both of these, and click the 'Start' Button.

Windows will now scan your drive, and hopefully fix any errors it finds. Once the scan is complete, check your Gmini to see if the problems you were experiencing have gone. If so, you may want to stop reading this guide, and go back to using your Gmini as normal.

However, if you still have problems, or you just want to go the whole hog, then continue on with this guide.

The next step is to perform a complete format of the drive. Archos recommend this if there are playback or copy problems, so it's a totally valid thing to do.

6) If you unplugged your Gmini to test it, now's the time to plug it back into your computer.

7) As before, right click on the Gmini Icon in 'My Computer', it may be labeled 'JukeBox', or it may not.

8) On the Menu that appears, click 'Format'

9) The Format dialog will appear offering a few options. Set the file syste to 'FAT32', the Allocation Unit Size to 'Default'. You can set the volume label to whatever you like, but for consistency, I recommend 'Jukebox'.

10) Click 'Start'. Windows will move the progress bar along to indicate that it is formatting. It is highly likely that the Gmini's HDD light only lights when the format is complete - this is normal; the drive electronics are clever and do the format in one big go at the end.

11) Back in 'My Computer', Double click on the Gmini Icon (It should now be labeled as 'Jukebox', or whatever you chose as a volume label).

12) At the very least you'll need to re-create some directories on the Gmini. In 'My Computer', Double click on the Gmini Icon to open it, and create the following folders: 'Music', 'Photo', 'Video' and 'System'. (This step will be automated once I get a ZipFile of all the default files)

13) Copy down all your music/videos/photos.

14) You are all done.

Updating Firmware

1) Unless you've recently already done it, download the latest firmware update from Archos (or this site) and save it to your desktop. URL for Gmini400 firmware

2) Copy the 'Update_Gmini400.AOS' file from your desktop to the Gmini folder.

3) Disconnect your Gmini from the Computer.

4) Turn on your Gmini, and navigate to the 'Setup' screen, and then the 'System' screen.

5) Highlight 'Update Firmware' and click on it. The Gmini will now update its firmware using the firmware file you downloaded and copied on to it.

6) Once the update is done, follow the prompts to restart.

7) After the reboot, double check the version number on the bottom right of the Gmini screen.
